More and more people find themselves working through their lunch breaks at their desks because of their current workload. A survey conducted by Right Management suggest that only 1/3 of American workers actually go out for lunch. You may be helping your work load in the short-term by staying in, but you may also be negatively affecting your career in the long run. Here are 5 tips on how-to use your lunch break to benefit your career.

Eat Lunch With Your Co-Workers. This is a great way to network and get to know the people at your company. Ask your co-workers out to lunch to get to know them better (not just the ones you already know)! Get out of your comfort zone and branch out to other people who work in different departments and see what they do on a day-to-day basis. By networking today, you may make connections that can help you with your current job and build networks for your future.

One word – Exercise. Using your lunch break to go and work-out will not only relieve stress, but release endorphins as well! If you’re feeling frustrated at work, take it out on the treadmill to help you keep a happy and balanced mind set. Once you get all of the “noise” out of your head, you will feel focused, driven, and ready to tackle your afternoon assignments.

Catch Up on Current Events. Use this time to see what is happening with the rest of the world. It’s easy to become wrapped up in our own schedules and forget that there are other states, let alone countries, than the ones we are living in. Use this free time as a way to brush up on your current events. If you don’t want to read long, lengthy articles, use social networks like Twitter for information in 140 characters of less!

Use the Time to Better Yourself. To be successful, you must continue to learn. To continue to learn, you MUST read. Find books that will help you in the corporate world, your industry, how to communicate better, etc. Always be on the lookout for a book that will help you grow and that will benefit your career. If you are more of an interactive person, find an Association that has eLearning programs that you can learn from. The great part about doing modules or finding a book is that they will create tasks for you to complete. You can document your goals, track what you’re doing to achieve them, and document items as you complete them. If you’re bettering yourself and improving your career, why not take out 20 minutes at lunch to do this?

Take a Break. Lastly, if you are having one of those day where you can’t seem to get enough done, take a break. Staying stressed isn’t productive and can affect your work. If you need some quite time, find a nice park nearby, your favorite restaurant, or maybe even a spa where you can go and sit for a while. Sometimes, turning off your work troubles and taking a step back from a situation is the best way to handle stress.
