Workplace Equality And “The Daddy Track” days, women are making strides in the workplace. Women now have the choice to work and be moms, and they’re juggling it nicely – though it’s no easy task, and most would say we have a long way to go to reach the ideal.

Less talked about though, is how these changes are affecting fathers. Because mothers are working outside the home more, even with the help of daycare and nannies, fathers are often required to be in the office less – or at least be given more flexibility – to be there for their children.

Not only that, but more fathers today want and expect to be able to at least tuck their kids in at night.  In a 2000 national survey by the Radcliffe Public Policy Center at Harvard, 80% of men in their 20s and 30s said that salary and prestige mattered less to them than being able to spend time with their families. Men want to be good providers, and they also want to be present fathers.

Luckily, it seems employers are increasingly on the same page. Three out of four companies surveyed by Hewitt Associates consulting firm said they offer part-time, flextime, telecommuting, job sharing and other options to provide more flexibility for working parents. That’s 45% more than in 1990.

Still, in reality, it can be career-hindering to dads who leave at five o’clock once a week to make a soccer practice or relieve the nanny, or in other words actually use those work “flexibilities.” Why? Because of old stigmas, perverse views about what constitutes work ethic – and the simple fact that there’s always someone willing to work a little longer hours and a little harder than you.

At the end of the day, it’s up to the individual to decide what sort of work-life balance he or she can live with and be happy. Then be invaluably hard-working and efficient during the hours you do put in. Which will give you more leverage with and trust from your boss to carve out a schedule that works for you.
