How will Healthcare Legislation impact staffing?

After the Supreme Court’s ruling, it’s clear the new health care law will make sweeping changes to our nation’s health care system. Many provisions will have a significant impact upon employers and their employees. While many of the changes are phased in gradually over the next eight years, many changes take effect this year.  Here are a few things to consider.

1. It will cost more to employ people.  That of course depends on whether or not you employ at least 50 full-time employees on business days during the preceding calendar year.

2. Full-time means 30+ hours per week.

3. The key provisions don’t kick in until January 1, 2014.

4. Will agencies be forced to pass along increased costs to clients?

5. There’s an exception for seasonal employees.  If an employee works for a staffing agency for fewer than 120 days each year, is he considered seasonal and excluded from the employee count?

6. Agencies will have to decide whether to pay their temps’ insurance premiums and potentially raise rates to cover costs, or risk paying fines if temps work too many days.

One thing is for sure.  Employers will want to know how staffing agencies are handling the new healthcare legislation.

Have you done any research on the legislation? What are your thoughts on these issues?
