Counterargument to the Skills Gap

As recruiters, we face the challenge every day of matching the right skills with the right job requirements, particularly during a time when there’s an obvious and growing talent gap.  We’ve written about it on our blog numerous times (just search “skills gap”).  Here’s an objection we’ve come across to the theory of the skills gap:

“Companies won’t pay employees what they’re worth.  Just because there’s high unemployment doesn’t mean skilled workers are so desperate for jobs they’ll settle for less pay than they deserve.

This argument may be valid in many cases, but nothing can dispute the fact that the U.S. is facing a shortage of skilled workers. Just look at high school dropout rates (30%).
