A Step in the Right Direction

We’ve posted numerous times on the current jobs dilemma, the “skills gap.”  Our own President and CEO, Brian Robinson discussed the Death of Vocational Education, and our Senior VP of Company-Owned Operations Tom Bodeep discussed the Difficulty of Recruiting.

If you aren’t familiar with the skills gap, or training gap, a simple Google search will yield endless results as proof that companies small, mid-sized, and large; across industries; in the United States and abroad are having trouble finding skilled blue-collar workers to fill openings for maintenance techs, plumbers, tool builders, welders, and operators trained on specific machines.  People simply aren’t being trained, or training themselves, to do these jobs.

So what can be done?  Well, obviously we need to open communication between companies, educators, and workers, to determine needs and ensure we’re training our people to fill those needs.

Monday morning the Obama administration announced it will propose an $8 billion, three-year plan for supporting career programs at community colleges to train 2 million people for the workforce (see the full Bloomberg article here).  At the very least, we see this as a sign that someone in Washington understands part of the problem we as recruiters see every day.
